D. Osborne Hughes

My name is Doz

D. Osborne Hughes, or Doz, as most people know him, is a creative, a full-time artist, photographer and published author, and a retired Police Officer, who now devotes his time to following his artistic passions.

An Author of fiction, he has published two books; ‘Above The Italian Woods’ and ‘The Last Celt’, ‘Waking Dreams’.  ‘The Phantom of Annwn’ is his second in ‘The Last Celt’ series of novels, which is in the final stages of publication on Amazon Books and Kindle.

Born in a small mountain village nestled amongst the Clwydian Mountains of Wales, his writing draws heavily on his Celtic heritage and his work as a police officer.

He would say, “Art is about capturing light,” And he is always looking; constantly searching for the light.  “It is the same with words, whether writing poetry or prose, fiction or even non-fiction.  There is always light, and to capture that light is a beautiful thing.”

His writing constantly captures the light in rich abundance.

Above The Italian Woods

You have always forbid me tell the story of how we met.  I have often wondered why?  It is a good story, a story worth telling, but it is not just our story; it also belongs to those who shared their lives and their love with us. Their story is also worth telling, even if it does tumble like the stream through the woods, over rocks and waterfalls, cascading towards the horrors that brought our summer to an end.

‘Above The Italian Woods’ is a quiet book, for the most part. It is a ‘One-Summer’, Coming-of-Age’, ‘Love Story’, but the real story is found in the lives of those who walked with us even those who hid in the shadows. I do not know and cannot say what is fiction or real any more, but in that summer I came to be a man and the course of our lives changed forever.

The Last Celt, Waking Dreams

423AD

Hyw’s childhood has been plagued by nightmares; terrifying images that flash across his waking mind. The most terrifying spectre of his darkest dreams is Māthōg, a savagely cruel, giant of a man, outlawed from ‘Scotti’ shores for committing the vilest atrocities against his own people.  With his ‘Blood Red Crows’, he scours the land, seeking the heads of the innocent, for the vanities of Blood Sacrifices.

Tutored at the hands of Ywel, his blind but all-seeing Grandfather, Hyw is  prepared as a warrior, but he takes the dark shadows of his ‘Waking Dreams’ as an omen of danger for him and his family.

Set amid the chaos and violence following the Romans abandoning Briton.  ‘The Last Celt’ chronicles Hyw’s struggle for survival.  Fear freezes inside him as his nightmares become a reality and the lives of those he loves, hang in the balance, but what can an eight-year-old child do, pit against all the evil intent of Annwn?

The Last Celt, The Phantom of Annwn

434AD

As a child, Hyw fights with all his might to save his family from the evil clutches of Māthōg and his ‘Blood Red Crows’.  With the point of his broken arrow as a weapon, he barely manages to save Bayr, his baby sister.

All they have left is each other, and the unbreakable bonds of undying love they preciously share together.  Nurtured by Ywel, their blind, but all-seeing grandfather, slowly broken hearts and lives are rebuilt and Love rekindles new hope for their unhappy home, but Māthōg returns, with tragic consequences.

‘The Phantom of Annwn’, chronicles the dark and often disturbing tale, of Hyw’s struggle for survival.  Pursued by the demons of his awful ‘Waking Dreams', he turns from love and rides off to take ‘Blood for Blood’.  But sitting astride his ghostly grey mare, his mind breaks and stalking through the shadows of his wretched life, Hyw edges towards his own destruction.

Above the Italian Woods
I finally got around to reading above the Italian woods.  Thank you.  I cannot remember when I have enjoyed a book as much as I did reading about you and Anne.  You grip me from the start and you didn’t let me go. I was completely entranced in the palm of your hand, like an awestruck trout in the Ruby pool.

I love the way you write; sheer descriptive elegance.  A delight to avidly consume!  You’re sure grasp of my emotional investment yielded a torrent of tears and I dug in for the finishing line.
